Getting Around Williamsburg

Travelers have several options for transportation near historic Williamsburg, Virginia. Shuttle service to Williamsburg hotels is available from the three airports closest to Williamsburg. The closest airport, Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, is approximately 16 miles away from Williamsburg. Richmond International Airport is about 45 miles away and Norfolk International Airport is about 43 miles away. Some Williamsburg hotels provide guests with airport shuttle service. Limousines, taxis and rental cars are also available at the airports.

Williamsburg can also be reached by train or bus. Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses stop at the Williamsburg Transportation Center. There is a taxi stand at the transportation center. Buses and trolleys operated by the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) stop at this center. Visitors can take buses from the transportation center to the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center in the historic part of Williamsburg. The visitor center is a few blocks from the transportation center. Some travelers may consider it within walking distance.

Visitors can take a shuttle bus or walk from the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center to the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg where museums and exhibits are located. Shuttle buses also provide transportation to the Historic Area. Visitors who are staying in accommodations in Colonial Williamsburg will find that most of the museums and exhibits are within walking distance. Cars are not permitted in the Historic Area.

Public transportation is available to places in the Williamsburg area besides Colonial Williamsburg. Travelers can take the Historic Triangle Shuttle from the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center to Jamestown and Yorktown. This shuttle does not operate during the winter months. The WATA buses and trolleys have service to hotels, restaurants and shopping in Williamsburg. The WATA buses also provide service to Busch Gardens and outlet shopping.
